Rectal Prolapse Treatment
Rectal prolapse occurs when a portion of the rectum protrudes from the anus. It can be a distressing condition causing discomfort, pain, and difficulty with bowel movements. Treatment options depend on the severity of the prolapse, the patient’s overall health, and their individual circumstances.
Overview
Rectal prolapse is a condition where the rectum (the last part of the large intestine) protrudes outside the anus. Treatment for rectal prolapse depends on the severity of the condition and may involve both non-surgical and surgical approaches. Here are some common treatment options:
Conservative Management:
- Dietary Changes: Increasing fiber in the diet can help prevent constipation, which can contribute to rectal prolapse. Adequate fluid intake is also important.
- Pelvic Floor Exercises: Physical therapy and exercises, such as Kegel exercises, may be recommended to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles.
Medications:
- Laxatives or stool softeners may be prescribed to alleviate constipation and reduce straining during bowel movements.
Biofeedback:
- This is a technique that helps individuals gain awareness and control over pelvic floor muscles. Biofeedback therapy is often used in conjunction with pelvic floor exercises.
Pessary:
- In some cases, a device called a pessary may be used to support the rectum and prevent it from prolapsing. This is a non-surgical option.
Surgical Intervention:
- If conservative measures do not provide relief or if the prolapse is severe, surgery may be recommended. The type of surgery depends on factors such as the patient’s overall health and the extent of the prolapse.
- Procedures may include rectopexy, where the rectum is surgically attached to surrounding structures to provide support, or resection of a portion of the rectum in more severe cases.
